How many reasons can a person give for having a weight problem?
The other day I was having coffee with Billi Gordon, one audacious, obese African-American man. When I first met Billi he had just been admitted into Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He told me over the phone: "I will be the large black man in the hospital bed." Large indeed. At 701 pounds, he is easily the fattest man in the hospital. He can't take an MRI that he needs because he doesn't fit into the machine. He literally has "saddlebags" of skin, drooping off his thighs and legs, in part smooth, in part dimpled. Billi has weighed in at a low 320 and has gone as high as 1,000 pounds, truly an awesome display of what a human physique can endure. In our discussion he states that there are many factors that lead to hyper-obesity: thyroid problems, stress, depression, a bad reaction to beta blockers, the fact that a dead mother could have been bipolar. The one thing he doesn't tolerate is disrespect. He is known for the withering look he gives to off the wall comments. Comments?
