Transporting handguns in Canada?
First of all, this is not a question of carrying a concealed weapon on my person. The question concerned carrying an empty handgun in a locked saddlebag in Canada. The scenario is; I plan on taking an extended motorcycle trip this summer. I will travel through many States and would like to visit Canada. I will have a handgun with me while traveling in the States. QUESTION: Can I legally store an empty handgun in a locked fiberglass saddlebag while in Canada? Please no liberal ranting. Thanks you.

Hi,
First off, I am involved with Government with respect to firearms and the Safety training certification a Canadian needs prior to getting a license to possess or acquire a firearm, whether it be rifle or handgun. The firearm legislation and law is very strict compared to the USA.
First off, to put it bluntly: you are not allowed to transport a firearm in the manner you intend (in your motorcycle saddlebag).
Canada has placed firearms into 3 classes:
1. Restricted: Certain handguns
2. Non-restricted: basically most rifles and shotguns
3. Prohibited: automatic weapons as well handguns and rifles that have been reduced to a particular size (see below notes).
Restricted firearms coming into Canada
Certain weapons (handguns) are restricted and may only be imported for the purpose of attending an approved shooting competition or target practice at an approved shooting club or range. Get in touch with the host club well in advance of the scheduled event, so arraignments can be made. You will need an Authorization to Transport before you can enter Canada. You must obtain this authorization in advance from the Chief Firearms Officer of the Canadian province or territory you will be visiting. This authorization will permit you to transport your restricted firearms between specified places within Canada.
Restricted firearms may not be imported for hunting or personal protection. Chief Firearms Officers will not generally issue authorizations to allow restricted firearms to be moved in transit through Canada. Restricted firearms include semi-automatic firearms with barrels less than 18.5 inches (460 mm) long, all handguns that do not fall into the prohibited category and semi-automatic weapons that are designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to an overall length of less than 26 inches (660 mm). Firearms declared Prohibited in Canada (including .25 or .32 calibre handguns, and/or having a barrel length of 105mm or less) cannot enter Canada under any circumstances.

Ok, now what do you do with your handgun prior to the Canadian Border as you would have carried it thoughout the US? Most border check points are on a city or town and there will be many private post box offices etc. Go to one of them and you should either be able to store it there, ship it home . . .or if you know where you will be exiting Canada (if at another point), ship it to yourself to a similar company and pick it up enroute back to the AS.
HINT: Don't try to sneak it into Canada as there are good probabilities you will be seached. If that is found, it will be seized and you will be arrested for having possession of a non-registered restricted firearm and will suffer consequences, one being you will probably never be allowed back into Canada.
