Mount tank During WW2 did any country mount a mortar on a Tank turret. Not like a normal matlet mounted B.L mortar,?
Used on Close Support Tanks, but on top of the turret for close support against enemy infantry if the tank only had an anti tank gun capability and no HE rounds. I suppose some Tanks had smoke and grenade discharges and I wonder if it did the same job. Cheers John.
None that I can think of. They all fired only smoke. Today this seems to be a feature unique to the IDF which fits a 60 mm mortar either on or in the turret of every tank. The original purpose for this was to suppress ATGW crews the likes of which they encountered en masse during the 1973 war. It was also a way to conserve tank main gun ammunition since running out of ammo mid-battle was a serious problem during that war. How well the 60 mm mortar has worked in practice is not well documented, but they still do it.
