Old clothing can make ideal cloths for cleaning your home. By cutting up old terrycloth socks, for example, you can create cleaning cloths that will last for years. Just cut the back edge of the sock from the ankle to the toe. These recycled cloths are very useful for cleaning windows, mirrors and counter tops. You can also put them over a Swiffer Sweeper instead of buying the disposable cloths made by the manufacturer. Any type of terrycloth sock will do for this purpose, but the dark ones will help you to see the dirt you've picked up more clearly.
Sleeves and pant legs from old clothing can be easily used to make puppets. Socks also make good puppets, and can be cut and sewn to make finger puppets, as well. You can remove the buttons from the clothes and re-sew them to create eyes for your puppet. If you're particularly skilled with a needle and thread, you could recycle the old clothes into pillows, purses, dolls or stuffed animals. You can use fabric paint, beads, studs or embroidery to cover up any stained or damaged areas. Websites such as Thriftyfun.com have many ideas about how to create new and interesting things out of recycled clothing.
Jeans. Old blue jeans have many fun uses. The material is durable and perfect to be made into another clothing item or a project.
Old Jeans Use #1: Shorts. If your blue jeans have holes in the knees, you can cut them off just above the knee and hem for some long shorts. They could also be left unhemmed for a more rugged look, or cut off higher up to make the shorts shorter.
Old Jeans Use #2: Jean Skirt. Use old blue jeans to make a jean skirt. Undo the inseam of your jeans and connect the front and back of each leg with a triangle of additional fabric, either from the legs of another old pair of jeans, or in a fun pattern, to make a skirt. You can cut the jeans off at any length to make a short or long skirt. Hem as desired, or even leave unhemmed.
Old Jeans Use #3: Purse. Cut the legs off your old blue jeans and sew up the opening on the bottom. You can make a purse out of the torso piece. Use spare fabric from the legs to make a strap by sewing a length in half with the right sides in, then turning inside right. Sew a snap or Velcro to the waistband for a closure – to add a zipper if you're really good on the sewing machine.
Old Jeans Use #4: Remove the pockets using a seam ripper and sew onto a canvas tote to add instant pockets. Pockets from old blue jeans can be sewn onto many other projects.
Shirts. Free t-shirts, school t-shirts, torn and stained t-shirts – we all have too many t-shirts. Here are a few ways to get some more use out of those shirts that are hanging in your closet.
Old Shirt Use #1: T-shirt Quilt. If you have a sentimental t-shirt collection, consider making them or, if you can't sew, having them made into a memorable quilt.
Old Shirt Use #2: Rice Bag Warmer. Cut off the sleeve of an old flannel shirt, fill with long grain white rice and sew up the ends. This will make a nice rice warmer for your back after a hard day's work, or your feet on a cold winter night. Just heat in the microwave for a few minutes.
Put a sponge inside an old pantyhose leg and use it for washing dishes or windows; the rough texture of the stocking removes dirt. Because they are washable, old pantyhose make good stuffing for homemade pillows, quilts, and toys. Launder old down and reuse in pillows. Make a lap robe or baby bunting. Make a new vest. Pull apart and save the down for reuse. Use the old vest fabric as a pattern to cut out a new vest, then sew together and stuff with the old down. Organize a neighborhood “Exchange Day.” Declare a time and place for the exchange of clothing and accessories. Donate the leftovers to charity. Keep old clothing items and use them for Halloween costumes or for children’s dress-up. Try renting formal wear or costumes instead of buying something you will only use once. See the yellow pages for “Formal Wear – Rental” and “Costume Rental.” If you buy or make something special that you will only wear once, such as a bridesmaid or evening dress, sell it at a consignment store. Have a garage sale.
I would argue that Yogi Berra isn't referred to as a genius – at least I've never heard him called that.
What I will say is that in addition to his long list of quotes, which provide insight and humor into both baseball and life in general, he was one heck of a ballplayer.
Consider these numbers: -15 time All-Star -3 time MVP -Played in 14 World Series, winning 10 of them -Most WS games by a catcher – 63 -Most hits in the World Series – 71 -1st in at bats and doubles in WS games, 2nd in RBI, 3rd in HRs and BB -One of only a handful of managers to win a pennant in both the AL and NL
Plus, his career numbers: Average 285 Games 2120 At Bats 7555 Runs 1175 Hits 2150 2B 321 3B 49 HR 358 RBI 1430 BB 704 SO 414
And an induction to the Hall of Fame in 1972.
I would say he was a darn good ballplayer who has a great personality that draws people to him, along with a knack for humorous quips and insights that people can relate to.
Just found your site & been devouring it, thanks. After 25 years traveling as airline crew (and constant leisure pass traveler) I’ve spent a lot of time with wheeled luggage (Travelpro is most airline’s contractual issue, but I prefer my 22″ Costco Kirkland rollaboard–indestructible, roomy, lots of excellent details built in).
