luggage Road Other than the Philippines, what other countries have Volkswagen Brasilia cars still running on the roads?
I live in the Philippines. And in 1982, my father bought a brand new Volkswagen Brasilia fresh out of the car factory. It was a pale yellow beauty. And it had a luggage rack above the roof. Throughout my teenage years it was our family car. When I was in my mid-twenties, Dad handed the car to me. It's 2006; and, I'm still using it and driving it on the road as ultra-modern SUV's and newer cars dominate the roads and streets of my hometown. But, up to now, I am still in wonder.....during the VW Brasilia's popularity here in the Philippines, did it also become popular in some other countries? From old books and magazines and newspapers, I have not seen a single VW Brasilia of another country. Sometimes I conclude that this beautiful car was exclusive only to the Philippines. Am I wrong?
Brasilia were built by VW of Brazil from 1973 to 1979 and are based on a standard Type 1 Karmann Ghia chassis and are powered by an air-cooled upright 1600cc engine (type 3 style case, with short VW Thing style fan shroud) with dual Solex carbs.
The Brasilia was never exported to the US (or Europe for that matter) and were sold primarily in Brazil, South Africa, the Phillipines, and a few wandered into Mexico and Portugal.
