Leather tank green finger leather fell on sebae anomone will it survive?
leather is now shriveled up and looking sad will it come back and open back up, anomone it doing fine and clown fish are happy in it. areas on the green leather look like its turning reddish brown where it fell on the anomone. turbo snail knock it off the rock it was sitting on. gave him a ticket for going to fast in tank. will take any advise on this
Hard to say for sure right now -- changes occur fairly slowly at first with both anemones and corals. Watch the finger coral closely over the next day or two, and if it looks like anything is disintegrating (not the normal slime sloughing off), then take action quickly.
When I have ailing leather corals, I will pull out the razor blade and slice off the unhealthy tissue, including about 1/2" of healthy tissue. The remaining piece should heal up on it's own provided it doesn't get injured again and environmental conditions are good.
The disintegration goes quickly, so don't worry about being aggressive. The downside is that you're sometimes left with a weird-looking coral, but it's better than no coral.
In addition, this is an easy way to propogate new corals if you ever want to.
Also, consider using underwater cement or superglue gel to adhere corals to a larger rock -- then they don't get knocked over by rambunctious snails. Don't worry, the superglue or cement won't hurt anything in the tank or even the coral if placed directly on the tissue. I propogate by cutting slices of leather coral, drying them off, and gluing them to small rocks that I then place in a safe area until they attach and start growing.

jeremy's saltwater reef / fish tank 2
can you use a UV sterilizer in a reef tank?
I have a problem with yellow algae in my 55 gal reef, due to the metal halides and cf's. I have mushroom coral, leather coral, and an anemone. If I put in a UV sterilizer will it starve the coral and anemone, since they need symbiotic algae to eat ? In other words, does a UV sterilizer kill the same type of algae that corals need to survive? thanks
I think you're confused about what a UV sterilizer does and how it works.
The UV unit attaches to the tubing that goes to an external filter (or you can just use a powerhead and tubing to the UV unit and a return). UV uses radiation from an encased lamp to kill microorganisms that flow through it. It won't kill anything bigger than a few cells in size - this rules out most parasites. It will take care of bacteria and algae spores.
What it doesn't do is kill anything living in your tank already. The zooaxanthellae in your symbiotic corals and anemones won't be harmed, because they will never reach the UV light - they're inside the organisms
UV also won't change the nutrients that your algae is feeding on. The only thing that can remove this is water changes and a good protein skimmer. Do you know what your nitrate and phosphate levels are?
Using both compact fluorescents and metal halides is a bit much for a 55 gallon (I'm guessing this is a full hood with both units in it?). What's your photoperiod? Twelve hrs. should be enough. Light intensity may also be contributing to your algae buildup. Try cutting back on the lighting intensity (eliminate the cf or mh for a few days) or photoperiod (less time on) or both - following a 20-25% water change.
Also, consider a few good herbivores (fish or inverts) that will graze on your algae. Or some macroalgae species (Chaetomorpha or Caulerpa) that will compete with your algae for nutrients. Just be careful of Caulerpa - it can take over a tank!
See the link below for more info: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=16&cat=1789&articleid=1642
ADDITION: I forgot to mention that I'd personally skip the UV - they're expensive and you have to change the lamps yearly to be effective!
DON"T WORRY ABOUT IT it doesn't matter what you wear as long as you're comfortable in it and feel confident don't stress about what others will say and stuff i really don't get why you stress over this type of stuff (worry more about passing school first)
Are you going to the one at Fiesta Texas? Ugh! I wanted to go SOOO bad, but my mom said no. Anyways. Go with the vegan shirt. Converse. Ponytail (It's not even June yet, and I've already seen mid-90 weather . . .). No make-up, it might smear, that's never a good thing, now is it?
