how long before vacation should i start getting a base tan?
Im going on vacation later this year. How many weeks/months before hand should i tan to get a base tan.. and for how long or how many times per week, im dumb when it comes to this so im looking for step by step lol. Im NOT one of those people who tan for 20 minutes everyday, and i am WHITE, like, ghost white, so. Please no "tanning is bad youll get skin cancer and look like a leather saddlebag" yes, i know that, hence why im 22 and have never been tanning before and am ONLY doing this so i dont burn too bad on my vacation. Thats it. so. please answer. and which lotion is best?
Give yourself a good month. Even though higher "level" beds have less burning rays (UVB) and more tanning rays (UVA) and will give you a quicker base tan, they won't be helping you build up burn resistance as well as the lower "level" beds with more UVB. You want to go in one of the lower "level" tanning units (your tanning salon will help you identify which ones are lower). They might tell you to use the higher level beds to get your tan faster, but trust me you need to go in the lower levels to build up your burn resistance. I was going in a high pressure bed (highest level available) for the full time every time for about a month and had a very dark tan, but then I went into a lower level bed for the full time and got a pretty painful burn on my back. Just goes to show that the higher levels (even though the give you a really deep dark and long lasting tan) aren't the best to use before vacation if you're looking for burn resistance. If you give yourself a month before vacation you will be able to build a great base that will protect you from burning on vacation. Start with half the tanning time (ex: if the maximum tanning time is 20 minutes, start with 10 minutes. If the maximum tanning time is 12 minutes, start with 6 minutes). This might not seem like a lot but trust me it really is. You don't want to burn, it will defeat the whole purpose.
Start going every other day. Your first three time stick with half time. If you aren't burning, increase your tanning time by 1 minute for the next two sessions. For your sixth and seventh session, increase by another 1 minute. By this time you will have a good base. After this, go about 2-3 times a week, increasing by 1 minute every time if you are not pink or burning. Never go two days in a row. It's very harsh on your skin and can cause sensitivity. If you must go two days in a row, make sure you wait at least 24 hours between visits.
Here's a model tanning schedule:
(example for a level 1 tanning bed with a 20 minute maximum exposure time)

Saturday: Upgrade to a high level tanning unit and tan for the full time (this will lock in your tan because higher levels have higher UVA percentages. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin and gives a deeper longer lasting tan. These units also have less UVB so you have less chance of burning.)
As far as lotion goes, it's preference. Most lotions give similar tanning results. An accelerator contains moisturizing ingredients and ingredients that help you produce more melanin so that you tan more quickly. This is a good choice if you want the most natural looking color. If you want to use an accelerator I suggest Swedish Beauty Dark Secrets. Dark Secrets contains a DermaDark bronzer which is a clear streak free bronzer that helps your skin produce more melanin and keeps you tanning up to 48 hours after your visit. It also has Body Blush which brings more oxygen to the skin. The more oxygen the skin has, the darker and quicker your color comes. Another good one is Designer Skin Phoenician. It is a silicone blend so it goes onto the skin very smoothly. It also contains OptiGlow which is a lot like Body Blush and brings more oxygen to the skin for a deeper tan. Another good accelerator that is a little less expensive is Swedish Beauty Botanica Shea You Love Me. It is very moisturizing and is hypoallergenic. I used this and got dark color. It's fragrance free.
A bronzer is like an accelerator with added color. It has ingredients that help you produce more melanin as well as dihydroxyacetone and/or erythrulose (sunless tanner), and natural bronzers (cosmetic bronzers that wash off in the shower). These lotions are good if you want deeper color more quickly. A good bronzer is Designer Skin Black. It's basically a bronzer version of Phoenician. Same silicone feeling and OptiGlow, but with deep, natural looking bronzers. Designer Skin Smile Your Dark! is another great one that is on the less expensive side. It smells amazing (fresh) and feels really nice on the skin. It gives a light bronzer, so you see most of your nautral color with just a hint of sunless. I also recomend you invest in a good after tan moisturizer. When you use these daily they will hold your tan, give you anti aging benefits, and also help boost your tanning results on the days you go tanning. You can buy a great inexpensive one from AustralianGold.com called Moisture Lock.
