Oiling English saddles?
I'm getting one soon. I'm actually picking up a Dover Circuit today to try out.
But what kind of oil/conditioner should I get for it? I've always had Western saddles and I just use neatsfoot oil and saddle soap for cleaning, and Harley Davidson leather dressing for darkening.
What's good for keeping French leather in good shape?
It's this color (and this is the saddle, although the one I'm looking at is used).

Oh, and I know not to oil a trial saddle! I just really plan on buying this one. Hopefully it fits my horse.
The best way to care for leather of any type is to wipe it down with a damp rag or sponge after every use to remove sweat and keep dirt from building up, and condition it lightly when it needs it - usually every week or two. No oil of any sort - neatsfoot, light oil, etc. - because it's quite easy to over-oil your tack, and that will cause the fibers to stretch and weaken. A good conditioner like Passier, Stubben or Effax lederbalsm, or Leather Therapy conditioner works very well - they do contain oil, but in small, specially formulated amounts. And be sure to condition ALL surfaces - seat, front and rear of flaps and jockey, buckle guards and panels. About the only thing you shouldn't condition regularly are your billets.
If you do need to clean your saddle, Effax or Leather Therapy cleaners work beautifully. Leather Therapy products also contain phenol, which keeps mold from growing. Glycerine saddle soap is fine, but be absolutely sure that you rinse and wipe all traces off your leather, because leaving a residue will actually attract dirt and eventually become that icky green film so often seen on older saddles.
